Assistant General Manager, Templeborough Biomass Power Plant

Eco2 Management Services Ltd (EMSL) are looking for a new Assistant General Manager to work on site at the Templeborough Biomass Power Plant in Rotherham.

The role is part of the EMSL management team and is focused on asset management activities. We are looking for someone with significant experience of large-scale process plant operation, ideally power generation or other steam raising plant. This important role is the ‘right hand’ to the General Manager.

The Plant

Templeborough Biomass Power Plant is a power station in Rotherham which generates renewable electricity using waste wood. The power station was commissioned in 2019 and is owned by Schroders Greencoat Ltd on behalf of pension fund investors. The plant is operated and maintained on a 24/7 basis by BWSC. Around 300,000t of commercial and demolition waste wood is burned each year at the plant, which is supplied by Esken Renewables. Eco2 Management Services Limited acts as the owner’s manager at the site. EMSL’s role is to ensure that all contractors, principally BWSC and Esken, discharge their respective contractual obligations in the best interests of the owner. One of EMSL’s primary duties is to manage the interface between the Operator and Fuel Supplier, ensuring that waste wood is ordered in a timely fashion and that waste wood is compliant with the power station specification.

Key Responsibilities:

  • To work closely with the Plant Manager/General Manager and supporting the O&M contractor on side, including power station operation, maintenance, health and safety and environmental issues.
  • Monitoring key plant performance data and secondary contractual obligations (e.g. spares management).
  • The Deputy General Manager can be expected to lead on other ad-hoc capital or commercial projects that will enhance plant operations.
  • Provide leadership in safety throughout the company’s business, supporting the O&M Contractor, Fuel Supplier and other site-based Contractors to establish industry leading safe systems of work and safety culture through commissioning and into operations and then to constantly improve on these through the operational phase of the project.
  • Assist the Contracts Manager in ensuring that there is a highly effective system for receiving, checking, weighing and sampling of around 50 loads per day of wood chip using the employer’s fuel team
  • Working with the General Manager, discharge of the employer’s accountabilities under the main plant contracts (including the O&M Contract, the Fuel Supply Agreement and the Ash Removal Contract), the Grid Connection Agreement and the Permits and co-ordinate the activities of the O&M Contractor, the Fuel Supplier and MGEL’s other main Contractors
  • Encourage, monitor and support performance initiatives by the O&M Contractor and ensure its compliance with the O&M Contract and continuous improvement
  • Monitor and encourage the discharge of the long term capital improvements at the plant, to be commissioned directly on behalf of the owner or via variations to the O&M Contract.
  • Maintain relationships with the plant’s other key stakeholders including Ofgem, the Environment Agency, the network operator, Insurers and Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council. Where relevant, support the O&M Contractor in establishing and managing their relationship with these same key stakeholders.
  • Ensure that an on-site fuel testing laboratory works safely and reliably.
  • Ensure high standards of record-keeping. Analyse performance and financial data so that this can be disseminated effectively to the plant owners in reports and at Board meetings..
  • Support companies Finance Manager as required in assessing the financial impacts of technical decisions and issues.
  • Deputise for the General Manager during periods of absence.

You will:

  • Have significant experience of large-scale process plant operation, ideally power generation or other steam raising plant.
  • Have experience of managing supplier and contractor relationships, including measuring, monitoring and improving performance, and conducting evaluations.
  • Be a confident user of MS Office, particularly Excel where a lot of the reporting is done. Intermediate skill level will be needed for the tasks involved.
  • Have a good grasp of Health and Safety management, through experience or IOSH/NEBOSH and appreciation of work in a positive safety culture.
  • Have good report writing and problem-solving skills.
  • Build credibility and trust easily through doing what you say you’re going to do, and consistently managing expectations of others.
  • Possess a strong degree of self-organisation and an ability to prioritise tasks appropriately.
  • Be a confident communicator, who builds productive working relationships with your colleagues, contractors and suppliers via email, phone, and face to face.
  • Be a strong and empathetic leader, who can demonstrate emotional intelligence and diplomacy in their interactions with all stakeholders.

The following skills and experiences would be a real bonus:

  • Engineering background, or possibly even qualifications
  • Project Management experience, or possibly even qualifications
  • Lean Six Sigma experience, particularly Root Cause Analysis
